Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, is an American rapper singer. Her work as a music, film and TV artist has won the actress the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also received an Grammy Award as well as six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah is a Newark New Jersey native. Her parents are Lancelot Sr. as a police officer as well as Rita, a teacher of Irvington High School. The couple divorced when Latifah was age of ten. Latifah, who was born and raised within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. At the age of 8 Her cousin gifted her the stage name Latifah, which means tender and gentle in Arabic. Being a tall girl, her height of 5'10 inches Latifah was a forward on her high school basketball team. In a school production, she performed the song Home from The Wiz. Latifah began her career as a beatboxer with the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah joined the Flavor Unit's original group, made up of several MCs as well as the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah rap Princess of the Posse. The song was recorded and given to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music has signed Latifah upon hearing the track. She released her first single, Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
